Sri Lanka Relents: Two Fishermen Freed, Remains Returned

A Bitter End

A tragic incident unfolded in the Palk Strait when a fishing boat carrying four Indian fishermen from Rameswaram was intercepted by the Sri Lankan Navy. In the ensuing chaos, the boat capsized, resulting in the death of one fisherman, Malaichamy. The other three were rescued and taken into custody by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Diplomatic Pressure Yields Results

The incident triggered a strong response from India, with the government summoning the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner to register its protest. The families of the fishermen, particularly Malaichamy’s family. Were distraught and demanded the immediate release of the surviving fishermen and the return of Malaichamy’s body.

Following intense diplomatic negotiations, the Sri Lankan Navy relented and agreed to release the two surviving fishermen, Muthu Muniyandu and Mookaiah, along with the mortal remains of Malaichamy. The handover took place near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), with the Indian Navy’s INS Bitra receiving them.
